The third most populous city in Polk County, Haines City has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The city began as Clay Cut, but residents agreed to change the name to ensure it received a railroad station.

Although the South Florida Railroad reached the city formerly known as Clay Cut, no railroad station was built, much to the residents’ dismay. So, they used the city’s name as a bargaining chip. If the railroad company built a station within the city limits, they’d rename their city to honor former colonel and engineer Henry Haines, who worked to develop the railroads in the South. Finally, they reached an agreement, and the station was built and the name changed. The city was incorporated in 1914.
